FORMULA of this year’s Dragon Forum is renewed and features extended program.  It will increase participant’s chances to get access to the film market on various levels and obtain financing through different approaches and from different sources. Thanks to the precise matchmaking the decision makers will receive the appropriate proposals.

PRE-PITCHING means three days (May 29 – 31) of industry program including:

• DOCS TO GO – Polish Film Institute presentation of upcoming Polish documentaries,
• FOCUS ON ITALY Conference,
• MASTERCLASS of Helena Třeštíková - Dragon of Dragons Award Winner
• TAKE ON THE OSCAR RULES – by Torene Svitil AMPASS

The Dragon Forum program contains also many other exciting events, that enable the networking and business contacts among the filmmakers. And last but not least, the participants of Dragon Forum receive special accreditations for the 52. Krakow Festival screenings and accompanying events. Six days from the morning till the night just for documentary life!

DRAGON FORUM PITCHING is: one day (June 1st) for public pitching and one day (June 2nd) for individual pitchings during meetings with decision makers, distributors, producers and funds representatives. These meetings will mainly be by prior arrangement, to associate each project with a person who may be really interested in it. In current market situation, where filmmakers can’t get fundings, and investors as well as funds are lacking of adequate projects, only very precise matching of propositions and demands can guarantee the success. Individual meetings are an excellent opportunity for experienced filmmakers to discuss the project without the need for public presentation. Projects in production or post-production are also accepted.

AFTER-PITCHING – evaluation, drawing conclusions from meetings and planning of future strategy will take place on the last day (June, 3^rd). At this time the awarding of the best project with the HBO Development Award worth 10 000 PLN (c.a. 2 500 EUR) will be also held. Additionally, in autumn to the chosen projects will be given the opportunity to make “marketing step ahead” during Jihlava East Doc Platform, DOK Leipzig and during the biggest co-production forum IDFA Amsterdam. This FOLLOW-UP will also be supported by Dragon Forum with consultations.

SELECTION of projects was especially difficult this year, due to a large amount of very interesting and well prepared applications from the whole Europe as well as from Middle East, Africa, USA and Asia. The selection committee decided therefore to invite to Dragon Forum pitching in Krakow the spectacular number of 30 projects! They can be entitled “DOCUMENTING THE WORLD” – as they have sharp and synthetic look at the changing reality around us, defines challenges and authentic struggles of the people and breathes the broad perspective. Our congratulations to the chosen ones! International Academy of Documentary Arts Dragon Forum is a yearly training initiative consisting in three Session per year so the Pitching 2012 Session will be the 21^st, which is one more lucky number not only for those who love gambling!

The Pitching schedule includes two days of preparation session, one day of public pitching and one day of specially arranged individual meetings with international experts, commissioning editors and funds representatives.

Wednesday, April 11^th, 18.30 – “International Financing of the Docs”
The lecture held by Marijke Rawie (Holland) and Dorota Roszkowska (Poland) covering description of methods of fundrising  for film realization as well as presentation of forms of collaboration with organizations supporting documentary production. The lecture is intended for all those who want to go deeper in mysteries of efficient financing of projects in audivisual sector with special focus on documentary film.

Thursday, April 12, 16.00 – “Festival Policy of Major Doc Festival”
The lecture held by Rada Sesic (Holland) about selection strategy of major festivals of documenatry films.

Friday, April 13, 16.00 – “Różyckiego Bazar Marketplace Project”
The lecture devoted to the project about famous and historical Warsaw Marketplace “Bazar Różyckiego”. This innovative documentary project will be presented by its author, Marek Miller (Poland) , head of Documentary Dept. at Warsaw University

Tutors and Experts:

1. Marijke Rawie – expert of documentary films development. Worked also as a head of documentary department at Dutch TV station AVRO.
2. Dorota Roszkowska – producer, documentary film expert at MEDIA programme, member of European Film Academy.
3. Rada Sesić – film consultant, lecturer and curator. Works as a mentor at the Master of film studies at The Netherlands Film Academy, one of selectors of IDFA and a program advisor of IFFR Rotterdam and Dok Leipzig. Head of the documentary competition at Sarajevo FF and  programer at IFFK India.
4. Jerzy Śladkowski – director of number of documentary films awarded at many festivals and screened in TV stations around the world, awarded in 1996 by EFA for the contribution to the development of European documentary. His film “Vodka Factory” received Golden Pigeon Prize at DOK Leipzig Festival in 2010.

Authors of synopsis, scripts, trailers or works-in-progress are invited to take part in the Second Session of Dragon Forum 2012 as observers. They will be given opportunity to consult their projects with Dragon Forum experts in view of upcoming deadlines of submitting project for MEDIA Program and Polish Film Institute supports.

The accreditation fee is 200 PLN plus additionally 35 PLN per day per person.

Dragon Forum wishes you Happy Easter!

The pitching consists of scheduled public presentations and individual meetings. Projects in the development, production and post-production phases (work-in-progress) qualify.  We strongly encourage to apply the experienced filmmakers looking for financing of an ongoing project or a finished rough-cut. At Dragon Forum they can have a meeting with decision makers represented in Krakow.

We strongly encourage filmmakers applying for participation in the pitching to become observers at the production session of the International Academy of Document, which will take place in Warsaw on 11 – 13 April. During the first session of Dragon Forum 2012 open to the public documentary film screenings were organized. This screenings attracted wide interest of the audience. Within 3 evening screenings you could watch films, production of witch was connected to Dragon Forum and to meet their authors as well as people from the production crew. „Invisible Strings – Talented Pusker Sisters” was the film which took part in Dragon Forum in 2009, was produced by HBO Poland. Screening’s special guest was Agnieszka Niburska from the HBO Poland promotion department. There was also a screening of “Crulic – The Path to Beyond”, made by Romanian director Anca Damian, which was also Dragon Forum participant in 2009. Arkadiusz Wojnarowski, from Magellan Film Foundation – Polish co-producer and distributor of the film, spoke about the backstage of its production. The last evening the first episode of the documentary series „Farewell Comrades!” was shown as well as presentation of the associated interactive website. The film is devoted to the collapse of the Soviet empire. German producer Georg Tshurtshenthaler from the company Gebrueder Beetz spoke about that unique trans-media project that has been realized in 12 European countries.

Dragon Forum 2012 participants will develop their film projects under the guidance of documentary professionals Georg Tschurtschenthaler (Germany), Dorota Roszkowska (Poland), Dimitriy Kabakov (Russia) and Jerzy Śladkowski (Poland).

Tuesday – 24.01.2012, at 18.30
“Invisible Strings – The Talented Pusker Sisters”, dir. Ágnes Sós.
This film was developed on Dragon Forum 2009, and produced by HBO
Central Europe. It was acknowledged as the best documentary film in
Hungary in 2010. The film was shown on festivals from Toronto to Seul,
Sarejevo to Camerimage. After the screening, Dorota Roszkowska will present the case study of production.

Wednesday – 25.01.2012, at 18.30
“Crulic – The Way to Beyound”, dir. Anca Damian
This great film was directed by  Romanian director Anca Damian, Dragon Forum 2009 participant. In Poland she found co-producer and co-financing from Małopolski Film Fund. Film was shown on the Locarno Film Festival,  now it’s distribution in the cinemas of Europe continues. After the screening case  study with Polish co-producer, Arkadiusz Wojnarowski from Ferdinand Magellan Foundation will be held.

Friday – 27.01.2012, at 18.30
“FAREWELL COMRADES!”. dir. Andrey Nekrasov
Тhis is TV and Internet series, which in interactive way tells the story about fall of communism. This cross media project was produced by Gebruder Beetz company from Germany in international co-production with such TV stations as  ARTE, ZDF and TVP, directed by Andrey Nekrasov from Russia. For the first time in Poland one episode of the series will be shown. After the screening, the whole transmedial project that the film is part of, will be presented by German producer Georg Tshurtshenthaler, from Gebrueder Beetz company and Polish co-producer, Krzysztof Kopczyński, from Eureka Media company.

Because of limited amount of places, the order of submissions is decisive.

As a result of the Laboratory over a dozen Polish and Ukrainian 5-10 minute shorts will be completed.   Based on this, the common film „Beyond Euro 2012”will be created. Not about Football Championship, but about the social phenomena and structural changes associated with it. This historic enterprise has a huge civilization aspect. It is also flywheel of investment in infrastructure for both countries!  Roads, stadiums and hotels are built and people are getting ready. Both societies are mobilized to accept large number of guests.

The subject of our interest is what happens outside the main spectacles. What will remain, when  fans and competitors will spread? We want to get a look beyondEuro 2012.

Jacek Bławut is an artistic supervisor of the project, and tutors of the Laboratory are eminent scholars of the document. Laboratory session will be held in Warsaw, Kiev and Lviv. Arkana Studio in cooperation with ukrainian partners is a producer of the project.

Submissions deadline is on 29^th January, 23:59 2012.
